A great year for mountain paths

The first year of the Cairngorms Mountain Heritage Project has gone exceptionally well. We successfully completed 13 contracts on sections of the Lairig Ghru, Lairig an Laoigh, Bynack More, Coire Raibeirt and Ben Macdui with work on the popular Windy Ridge path now complete. This work will make a huge difference to the control of erosion in the Cairngorms, giving people a good walking surface and allowing the habitat at the side to regenerate.

A huge thanks to all the contractors who worked with us this season, Upland Access Ltd, McGowan Outdoor Access, Terra Firma Environmental Ltd, Arran Footpaths, Highland Conservation Ltd and Hitrak Ltd.

But work for the COAT team continues apace with planning for the 2012 season already underway. We are planning work on further stretches of Lairig Ghru, Lairig an Laoigh, Bynack More, Coire Raibert and Cairngorm Plateau to name but a few.

Also next year we will be heading deeper into the Cairngorms and carrying out work on Beinn Meadhoin and Coire Domhain. To allow this work to be done effectively we are currently working with the team at Mar Lodge Estate, National Trust for Scotland, to design an innovative Remote Accommodation System. This will allow the footpath team to live close to the work site and avoid the long daily walk in. What this space for further details.
